This is the second of three 2009 / 2007 tastings I am putting on, looking, principally, at these two great years.

Germany has been a notable beneficiary of climate change, global warming. The first decade of this century saw a remarkable run of fine vintages, and both 2009 and 2007 are outstanding in the Mosel. Both years had long ripening periods and have produced wines, in different styles, of quite exceptional class and refinement. The wines were hugely seductive, exciting, and impressive to taste early on, and I have no doubt they will impress similarly in early maturity. If you want a detailed look at the two vintages, Sebastian Thomas’ summaries (Howard Ripley Wines) are amongst the best on the web, here is the link

Here we explore some of the best wines from the great five mile ‘wall’ of vines between Bernkastel and Zeltingen, via Graach and Wehlen. An opportunity to consider JJ Prüm’s Graacher Himmelreich (as distinct from their Wehlener Sonnenuhr) and to compare directly their Graach and Wehlen from the same vintage; to try Zelbach Oster’s splendid, juicy, glacé-fruited Zeltingens, and to see why Willi Schaeffer’s Graacher Domprobst (he owns just 2 hectares, hence their rarity) are deservedly so highly sought-after for their superb blend of intensity and delicacy … wines of great beauty. As with the first tasting, we have a nice spread of Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese, and there are three direct 2009 / 2007 comparisons. We will finish up with Fritz Haag’s 2009 Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Auslese #10, a wine of Beerenauslese quality.

Retail prices range from around £25 to £100.
