At first glance, the weather pattern in 2008 does not suggest a great vintage, the early part of the year was very mixed. But sufficient heat in July, a relatively cool, dry August, and a perfect dry, sunny September with cold nights and fresh winds, along with ideal harvest conditions, made for wines that are intense in flavour, beautifully defined and prolonged by their vital acidity, and with an exceptionally fine mousse texture. The few I have tasted so far are gorgeous. By some way the best Champagne year between 2002 and (we are told) 2012.

Very few of the ‘Luxury Cuvées’ are yet available, but these nine wines will give us an excellent initial view of the year. There are two first rate ‘Non-Vintage’ wines here, and the point of tasting them is that they both have 2008 as their primary base wine. The Charles Heidsieck (60% 2008, 40% Reserve wines) was laid down in 2009, and disgorged in 2016, the sort of time on the lees normally reserved for vintage wines! And the Jacquesson 736 is 66% 2008, 34% Reserve, disgorged in 2013.
