We haven’t been exactly blessed with great Champagne years recently, but 2002 is something to get excited about. By some way the finest available vintage since 1996. But very different in character. 1996 is notable for the very, sometimes painfully, high acidity, a long term sinew which makes many wines still relatively forbidding. 2002 is quite the opposite: rich, supple wines many of which are gloriously gratifying already. They have a surprising combination of flesh allied to remarkable finesse; effortlessly elegant, graceful, harmonious wines, with all the caressing, superfine, luxury texture one wants from great Champagne. It is perhaps a year which favoured Pinot Noir in particular, and most of the wines we will taste have a predominance of this grape, but we will also have my two favourite Blanc de Blancs, Pol Roger’s Blanc de Chardonnay, and Taittinger’s Comtes de Champagne.

There has been some suggestion that 2004 Roederer Cristal is even finer than its 2002, so we will take the opportunity to compare them side by side. It should be a great tasting!
