2005 Mosel Saar Ruwer

This is an outstanding Mosel-Saar-Ruwer vintage, one to rate alongside the really great years of the last century .... 1990, 1959 .... And as in the favoured regions of France a warm, dry June and July and a splendid Indian Summer in September and October, with high daytime temperatures and really cold nights, made for a perfect growing and picking season. The wines were high in both sugar and acidity, and with an abundance of very clean botrytis too.

This made for quite exceptional Spätlese and Auslese. There is a deliciously racy vitality behind the juiciness, there is a crystalline purity of fruit and, their concentration and intensity notwithstanding, these are also wines of scent, subtlety, and a filigree delicacy.

The accepted wisdom with German wines is to enjoy them young, at two to four years of age or, better, to wait until they are at least ten. Perfect then! Alongside the top sites, many names here are amongst Germany’s very top producers: Fritz Haag, Rheinhold Haart, Loosen, Egon Müller, JJ Prüm, Von Schubert,..... I was excited when first tasting these wines at the London trade tasting in June 2006, I can hardly wait to try the line up now. I can guarantee they will be a joy to taste.
