Leoville Las Cases Vertical 2004 back to 1982, ten vintages
Léoville Las Cases Vertical Thursday 25th October 2012; 6.30pm
The 50 hectare heart of the Las Cases vineyards, the wall-enclosed Clos, faces the vineyards of Latour across the small jalle marking the boundary between St Julien and Pauillac. Las Cases is the most northerly of the St Juliens and has something of the richness of a fine Pauillac in its style. Its wines are, for the most part, wines which need plenty of time in bottle to mellow but, in the ‘middleweight’ vintages, Las Cases is now making wines with less emphasis on structure and more on earlier drinkability as the 2004 will show. The château has a track record of great consistency over the past 40 years or so, and a quality level which, in great years, puts it close to the First Growths. Here will be all its recent ‘grand vintage’ successes: 2000, 1996, 1990, 1986 and 1982, alongside years that are more accessible, if less imposing: 2004, 1998, 1985, but which are particularly good beverage value in today’s rather feverish claret market.
